So im trting to get my first sand bottom tank going. And the water doesnt seem to want to settle. Its not a new tank ive had it running for almost a year but we decided to move some stock and it opened this tank up. Well i decided i wanted to try sand. We poured it in an almost empty tank, and the water still having set over night looks like a dust storm! Did i do something wrong, do i need to do something more, whats tye next step???

If you used play sand, it will take a while to settle. Pool filter sand is preferable. Search this forum for pool filter sand.

Did you wash the sand in a bucket first? If not, you will need to keep refilling and draining the tank until you remove the majority of "dust."

Like Matt said, play sand it terribly "dirty". PFS has almost no fine material in it and clears up in a matter of hours. The one time I used play sand, I washed it in a 5 gallon bucket before putting it in my tank.

To try to help clear things up, get a polishing filter pad and throw a power head in the tank (aquaclear sells them). This should help.

Ha ya oops. Washing would have been good! Lol but ya i did use play sand couldnt get pool filter. But i do have a sponge filter and a 30 AC on the tank thats not running. Wasnt sure if having the water still would help it settle but ill turn the AC on and keep changing the water. Thanks! Live and learn!

Not sure I'd turn on the AC until it's settled, I'd be concerned about sand hitting the impeller. You could drain, fill a little, drain, fill, etc. until you get the dust out.

JUST PUT PANTYHOSE AROUND THE INTAKE TO STOP SAND AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD.;)
