sand w/ Larger CA and SA cichlids

Has anyone kept the larger central american or larger south american cichlids (sajicas, salvinis, etc. ) in tanks with sand? I am wonering if this is in their natural habitat or if they prefer something more similar to gravel. I appreciate any feedback.

I had a few salvinis. MAN! Thats a mean fish. I didn't know it was THAT mean when I got it.
Drove my convicts crazy! Convicts are pretty though. I'll get another pair sometime if I can
find the blue strain.

did you use sand or gravel with your salvini's? I am calling laterite (fluorite) 'gravel'.

I used a medium-small grain dark gravel.
