Riddle me this:

What attaches itself or grows on a fish that resembles a small light brown snail? Have a tetra that developed a small brown bump/growth some months ago on its snout, put him in isolation and said bump is now almost the size of a split pea. Fish has never skipped a beat and when it first developed I gingerly explored the possibility of removing it manually. Seemed pretty 'rooted' so I let it go but now the thing is huge and I'm thinking of surgery so to speak. Would help to know what it is and if there's a way to kill it. Suppose if it's a tumor that there's nothing for it. Fish is still fine.

Any ideas?

I can't be the only opinionated person on this board...

...or is that much of a mystery?

You wanted honest opinions....

... burial at sea.

If it is something contagious, keeping the tetra is definitely not worth it.

As in an offering to the Great Porcelain Imminence?

Occupational curiosity. Yours is the obvious rational response - go figure.

Science, and life science in particular shouldn't be rushed...

...especially when it's likely to result in early death.

At least that''s consistent with my clinical assessment - I figure just 'whacking' it carries a survival probability well south of 2%, especially since I can't think of anything topical to apply afterwards other than petroleum jelly, which has about zero medicinal value, that will help heal the wound and assuming the patient survives the procedure.

But then why not - 'tis merely a mutant tetra, no? Time to go polish up an Exacto knife. :D

You can try Iodine Tincture to cure the cut. It has been used on fish before for wounds and open sores.
