So -- the ongoing saga of my dysfunctional rainbow cichlid pair, who have had five or so broods in the past several months -- but none of the fry last beyond three weeks or so. Each time, one of the parents has shoved the other away from the eggs and raised the babies alone. Same thing this time, with Mom being the guardian and dad pushed away -- even with lip-locking. Babies were free swimming a few days ago. Dad was trying to get involved -- he's even snag some strays in his mouth and return them to the spot mom prefers behind some driftwood. BUT this morning -- Dad is guarding the bulk of the babies in his favorite spot in the front of the tank and Mom is guarding a much smaller swarm in the back of the tank! Has anyone ever seen something like this? It will be an interesting experiment to see if one is more successful in the long run than the other . . .
