Practical uses for a collander

So this past weekend was a big fish project wekeend for me. I received a bunch of new fish (more details to come in later threads) and had to do a lot of tank work to get the tanks presentable again. Fish had to be transferred from tank to tank, and I completely tore apart and rebuilt my two largest tanks. I was completely rescaping my 90 which turned into a big project.

Step 1. Drain about 20% of tank volume into a bucket/tub.
Step 2. Remove all rock and decor from the tank.
Step 3. Start catching all fish from the tank and transfer to tub.

Now this is where the task got interesting. I only have 1 large handle net to catch fish from deep tanks. With about 8 large fish left, the net completely snapped in half and was no longer functional. I have several large fish that need to be caught out from the tank with no net. Its 2AM and borrowing a net right now isn't really feasible. I looked around to see what I could use to catch my fish, and voila the all-purpose collander.

It was actually pretty funny. I had been chasing these fish for at least 10 minutes with a net, but I caught them all within 5 minutes of whipping out the collander. After I moved all of the fish out, I had a deep bed of sand mixed with gravel and crushed coral. I had to put egg crate down to distribute weight for a monstrous rock I bought from Jim at the meeting (thanks again) which meant I had to sift out the gravel/crushed coral, and move the sand well enough to get the egg crate down flat and clean. So about thirty minutes spent sifting sand, then I could put the egg crate down, add more sand, throw in some rock, add water, and toss the fish back in.

This was only one episode of a very long night I had. I'll detail the rest of the adventure in another thread.

Picture 1. Tank mostly drained with fish still left.
Picture 2. Broken net
Picture 3. Venustus in collander
Picture 4. Holding tub for fish during adventure.

P.S. No fish were harmed during the making of this thread. I am now known as Mikeguyver to dogofwar (matt).

Ok, don't think pictures posted, but I'll see after it goes up. Will try to repost if possible. Still having a "security tokens" issue.

Ok, the forum doesn't like my pictures, so I guess you'll have to use your imagination. I'll try to reshrink them later and see if I can get it to work. Who wants pasta?

Haha! I know what some one is getting for Christmas. Seriously I need a new strainer too. Zack used mine to wash the rocks before he put them in our 75g.

Downloaded some software to shrink my pics. Funny, usually I want to go bigger. I'll keep the order that was mentioned in the initial thread.

I used a plastic collander to catch my larger barbs when relocating them. It was much easier than a net and (I believe) less stressful on the fish.

In theory a collander wouldn't harm their scales like a net does.... it's just a bit cumbersome  I rarely lift a fish out of the water with a net. I catch them with a net then scoop them with my hand out of the net so I don't harm their scales/slime coat as bad.

I was just glad I didn't get any PETA responses saying I was doing something wrong. I remember saying to myself it was better than trying to go noodling. It might become a regular thing after how well it worked:eek:.

I have a plastic collander that I use in my fish room. I use it mostly for gravel cleaning. The dollar store carries them, they're sturdy and come in different colors.
