Anyone have some extra? I want to try it first without buying a whole big piece..maybe for cheap or free? Can trade some items also..I'm gonna try it on a 33 long..so I'd need a piece about 12"x16+" ..anyone?

I have a nice amount left from a sheet I purchased at a CCA mini auction a few years ago. It is the larger cell foam, I use it in 4inchX4inchX8-10 inch rectangular columns for a home made sponge filter.

The images show an example filter without lift tube and the size of the sheet I have left. It is at the bottom of my basement stairs.

The sheet I have left is 34X34X4 and I would sell for $120 if anyone is interested.

It is good for cubes or rectangles, not the Hamburg Mattenfilter for which you need 1 or 2 inch thick foam.

By the way, retail on a 39X39X4 inch sheet is $220.

Just for reference, here's what I use Poret for. I spoke directly with Stephan about where to start, and it's what he recommended.

For Mattenfilters:
10/15/20L/33 gallon tanks: 2 inch, 30 ppi
40 breeders: 3 inch, 30 ppi

For my canister pre-filters, I use 20 ppi cube material. The larger ppi stuff is less likely to compress if you don't clean them very often (like me). I used to have the gray, ATI Hydrosponges on the canisters....I still use the plastic sponge holder parts and cut the Poret to fit on them.

I've also used some of the blue, really coarse 10 ppi foam in the back of my HOBs as a replacement for their regular filter inserts and in my canister filters. I've tried some of the higher ppi stuff (smaller pore size) in there as well and although it will work in a canister filter, it's more likely to clog and I end up with a lot of bypass around the foam if I don't clean it often (which I don't....oh well) :)

Also, remember, since this stuff is expensive, if you have good sized pieces left over, they can be glued together with silicone to make a larger piece and they'll still work just fine (according to Stephan).

Hmmmm..thanks for the reference Christine! I was contemplating if I should get a 2" or 3".. I was aiming for 20 PPI but I see you use 30 so I will go that route..thanks! Does swiss tropicals sell by the foot? I don't quite understand their dimensions.. If its 19x19" is it 19 inches by 19 inches? Or 19 feet by 19 inches?

Sells by inches. I use the 10 ppi and the 20 ppi in my canisters and for prefilters (but never discussed it with Dr. Tanner).

Never thought of gluing pieces together. I like that idea. Much neater than stuffing random pieces in a canister.
