PLay sand

How do you know if play sand is safe or not? I have cichlid sand in all of my other tanks and that cost me some dough. Rather not spend the dough on the cichlid sand but I guess if I have to I would.

I've found it to be too fine for medium and large fish. Pool filter sand costs about $10 for 50lbs. Best bet for a natural looking sand.

I have used play sand in my tanks. $5 for a 50lb bag. I like it's white color, but it's too fine. But it worked fine. I will probably go with pool filter sand next time.

no play sand goes everywhere and clouds up your tank everytime the fish disturb it. PFS is your best bet.

I don't have a problem with the playsand kicking up too much with my fish or clouding the water, but it is very fine - looks like "sugar" sand in the tanks (to me). Someone here (Richard, I think) told me to use a bucket and a hose to clean it - fill bucket 1/4 way full with sand stick in hose and blast water. Allow to run until clear, stir with hose and repeat until water runs clear. You lose sand - but I don't have any problems with cloudy water or kick up.

I think I'll be trying pool sand in my next tank.

As long as you wash the play sand very very very thoroughly it works great. I haven't had any problems with it. You just have to be careful not to turn the filters on before any floating sand sinks or it can get caught in the impellers.

Wheres the best place to get pool filter sand?

I can get it at a hydro-pool right down the road. Your best bet is to just search pool supply stores near your location and call and see if they got it.

Just search for your nearest pool store, but make sure that the sand is the grade you want. I had stopped at the pool store next to House of Tropical and bought a bag of filter sand. The label said "Filter Sand" but it was like 1 maybe 2 grades smaller than crush coral and very sharp looking. I ended up finding what I wanted at a pool store in Rockville behind White Flint mall.

I use play sand... LOVE it. But I would not suggest it if you are using filters other than sponge filters. I like how fine it is.... if you wash it enough it doesn't cloud up your tank ;)
