The right direction for me is a couple 2 liter bottles with yeast and sugar in them. works great for me. I can let you know how to make it if you are interested. total cost 10 bucks. the yeast is the most expense thing at about 7 bucks a container.

have a pressurized system on a 125 gallon with sump that is for sale $60
can send you pictures on my phone, request at 703-981-1905

DIY CO2 can seem cheap at the outset, but if you do the math, it's actually more expensive than pressurized after about a year, and DIY has a hard time generating enough CO2 (and doing it consistently) to handle anything bigger than about a 40 gallon tank. Lots of GWAPA folks that started out with DIY CO2 eventually end up going pressurized.

But it's awfully fun and cool to watch Chemistry and Biology in action!
