piranhas

Hello everyone I haven't had an aquarium since I was a child and all the pet stores that I frequented in PG County are no longer around. My first question is are there any independent pet stores still in operation and secondly are piranhas still legal to own as pets?

There is a pet store in Beltway Plaza. I haven't been recently, but I heard the store the guy had before had a good number of Pirahna. There also is Eden which is small, but has been around forever in Colmar Manor. I think there may be a place in the Capitol Heights area, but the name is escaping me.

Pirahna are illegal in Virginia, but legal in MD.

Well I live in DC so ima check out Beltway Plaza I'm assuming that's the same as Greenbelt Mall, Capital Heights if you are referring to the pet store in Hampton Mall I would be surprised if they are still open.

What type of Piranha are you looking for Pygocentrus Nattereri (Red Bellies) are pretty common and easy to come by, but if your looking for any other type of Pygo (Piraya or Terns) you'd have to order online. I've seen a few different species of Serrasalmus at House of Tropicals over the years.

Rich (used to own Riverdale Pets) owns the store in Greenbelt mall. He will likely have what you are looking for.

I will be heading up to Beltway Plaza in the morning before I go to work and check them out. I will be looking to see what size tanks I have left over the years and checking for leakage over the weekend. I know I have atleast 2 10 gallons and I hope I still have my 29 gallon but these are just to het me started back in the hobby will be getting much bigger tanks.

Not to poopoo on your plan, but just wanted to give you a heads-up.

If you're looking to get back into the hobby and get excited about it, piranhas are pretty boring fish in my experience. I've heard that they can be cool in a big group in a huge tank, but I've only watched a small group (4 +/-) in a 55/75. They're really good at hiding when they see you and despite trying really hard (even built a mini deer blind out of chairs and blankets in front of my buddy's tank) to watch them eat, never saw anything remotely worth the hype.

For excitement, I say get some Africans or some bigger central Americans.

Not quite my expirience. When i had them we would have almost feeding parties! My friends would make me tell them the nights i was feeding them so they could watch! It got me free beer all the time :D but they didnt really swim around at all otherwise. Interesting fish though.
