Report: Hochuli relied on videoboard to throw flag

From our friend Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com comes an interesting item regarding Sunday night’s game between the Packers and the Patriots.
Per Reiss, referee Ed Hochuli looked to the videoboard at Gillette Stadium while talking to his crew after Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty hit Packers tight end Andrew Quarless in the second quarter of the game.
Reiss explains that a flag for unnecessary roughness then was thrown 20 to 30 seconds after the play ended.
If that’s what Hochuli did, he committed a blatant violation of the rules regarding the use of replay, even if the ultimate decision to penalize McCourty was the right decision. The decision should have been made based on the live action, not based on replay review.
The next question is whether and to what extent McCourty will be fined for the hit. In that regard, use of the available replays is presumed

IM NOT A STEELER FAN BUT I MUST SAY THE REFS SEEM TO TURN AWAY WHENEVER ROTHLISBURGER GETS HIT (EVEN IF HIS NOSE IS BLEEDING PROFUSELY) LOL. NO VIDEO TAPE OF THE ASSAULT I GUESS. HOWEVER THEY WILL HIT HARRISON FOR A CLEAN HIT. I SAW A FEW QBS GET HIT ON SUNDAY WITH NO CALLS ON SUNDAY AS WELL AS CUTLER HIT LAST NIGHT EVEN BUT NO FLAG. SO I ASK WHO DECIDES THIS CALL EACH INDIVIDUAL REF ON CASE BY CASE OR WHAT? WHEN I READ THIS ARTICLE IT JUST MADE ME WONDER WHO ELSE THINKS THE REFS, ALBEIT THEY DO A GREAT JOB OFFICIATING MOST OF THE TIME, HAVE BEEN BLOWING MORE CALLS THEN USUAL. EVEN WITH REVIEWS THEY DONT GET IT RIGHT. ITS LIKE WHAT PLAY WERE YOU WATCHING ON SOME OF THESE CALLS.

I think as fans we see more blown calls, but that is because there are more cameras. The refs are just as bad/good as they've always been.

SO HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN A NO CALL FROM THE REF RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PLAY ...AND ITS OBVIOUS HE SAW IT? ONLY FOR A LATE FLAG TO COME IN FROM A REF DOWNFIELD AWAY FROM THE PLAY LOL. CAMERAS ARENT INVOLVED IN THESE CALLS. JUST GOOD OLD FASHIONED EYEBALLS.LOL

They're human and they make errors.
Dolphins beat the Steelers a few weeks back...refs blew a fumble call and the Steelers scored and won.
Stuff happens.

Ya just gotta know how to handle the refs... Take for example my Browns, they don't have to worry about bad calls going against them at home anymore, not since the little bottle incident!!! They'll think twice before they try to go back a play and review it in Cleveland anyways...

Not sure that there are "more" blown calls now but we definitely see more thanks to the amazing game coverage now a days.

Steelers had that atoned for last week against the Jets-at least 7 defensive holding penalties that I saw should have been called against the Jets, including one on the Steelers last possession that likely saved a TD and the game for the Jets. As Phil SImms so astutely put it whilst watching the replay, "Oh, I see now why Sanders slowed down".

I didn't mind it when they were holding the Pats back in week 2 or 3. :)

NFL apologizes to Bucs for Kellen Winslow TD that didn’t count

In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Lions, Buccaneers tight end Kellen Winslow caught what could have been a game-winning touchdown pass — except that Winslow was called for offensive pass interference, and the Bucs ended up having to settle for a field goal in a game they would lose in overtime.
Now the NFL has told the Bucs the official got the call wrong.
We got an apology this week on the touchdown to Kellen,” Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson said. “That doesn’t help anything at all. . . . We got a number of those this year which has been real discouraging because we’ve played so many tight games. You can’t have those kind of mistakes.”
Olson may run the risk of being fined by the league office for divulging that the Bucs were told the call was wrong. Bucs head coach Raheem Morris wouldn’t answer reporters’ questions about the call for exactly that reason.
“It’s Christmas, and I just bought a bunch of people gifts,” Morris said. “I like to keep my money.”
Former VP of Officiating Mike Pereira wrote at FOXSports.com that he didn’t think any call should have been made, but that if anything it was Lions defensive back C.C. Brown who should have been flagged for contact with Winslow, not the other way around.
