New programs?

Has the club thought about starting an endangered species program? With the amount of species that is red listed I think its important we strive to keep these beautiful fish for everyone to enjoy before they are gone. How about something similar to the CARES program the ACA has. I know other clubs are doing this and being successful at it. Linking up with other clubs across the country, sharing knowledge and fish can only be a benefit to us, the endangered species and gets our name out there. Just a thought.

My perspective is that we should push for full participation in ACA CARES (register fish, etc.) vs. starting a new (duplicative?) program.

Although I'd like to think about what we can do to support conservation...

We could do what HCCC has done, have a person that is ACA Cares Coordinator. That person could provide info at meetings about CARES species and give breeding updates.

I agree that participation in the ACA CARES is very important as well. I was just thinking of something on the local level as well. A group of fishkeepers willing to make dedicated room for a particular species on the list. That info could be kept in a club database for all to see. I just thought it would be an additional way we can take a more active role in conservation in conjunction with the ACA CARES. I was thinking that the ESP and the CARES programs that the HCCC started on their level could be something we could do here as well. Please if I'm overstepping my boundries being a Junior member please let me know.

You have not overstepped any boundries. Ideas and feedback are welcomed here!

A long time ago, Ron Nielson tried to get a conservation program going, but the club was too small with few people able to set aside the amount of tanks needed to have the program flourish.

The only thing that would limit my participation is that I keep only SA's and very few West African's. That's all I know.

what about just keeping a list of people who keep CARES fish? maybe publish that list in the Biotope?

I like the idea of having an ACA Cares Coordinator too.

do we get extra bap points for breeding cares fish? if not we should do that too.

S/A has its share of endangered species as well and needs just as much conservation. The Capital Area Endangered Species Program would encompass species from all regions. Working in conjunction with the ACA and sister clubs we could help keep these fish for generations.

Well... the bap program kind of does what you are asking already.

If someone participates in bap with enangered fish I have a picture and a written paper about the spawn. Dates are included as well.

You get crazy points for doing endangered fish.
