New Plecos

Since today was black friday I went ahead and bout some fish food and
other equipment at congressional. Since I already bought a new guitar
and a crap ton of tee shirts I didn't want to walk out with a ton of fish.
But unfortunately I happened to spot a 6" blue phantom pleco (L128) and a 3"
gold nugget pleco (L18). Long story short I now have 2 new plecos. My
question is, how can i get the cucumber to sink to the bottom for them?
Someone on another forum suggested a fork but, A. I don't want to leave
a metal object in the tank for more than an hour and there is no way 2
plecos can finish a whole slice of cucumber in under an hour, and B.my
mom would kill me if I put one of her forks in one of my fish tanks. Also,
is breeding gold nugget plecos any different or harder than breeding
bristlenose plecos? Has it ever been done?

I use forks all the time....haven't had a problem leaving them in the tank, heck....sometimes I forget and leave them in there for days.

My husband would kill me if I used any of our "people" forks, too, so I bought a few super cheap-o forks at the dollar store (or check Target or Wal-Mart) and they are now only for fish tank use. I think I spent a whole two bucks on four of them.

I zip tie them to a small flat rock then drop it in when they are done the zip tie floats to the top if im lucky, if not i go in for it but no rush cause its harmless. I felt the same way about a fork

You can also use a rubber band to attach veggies to rocks. There shouldn't be any issue with leaving forks, rubber bands, or other inert objects in your tank. There won't be any effect on your fish.

With respect to breeding, Planetcatfish reports that they have been bred in captivity once. Here is a link to the page on Planetcatfish:

It is a great place to go for info on L number catfish.

You can also use plastic forks (also from the dollar store).

I recently tried frozen yellow squash and it sinks on its own!

I found that blanching zucchini for 2 minutes resulted in sinking veggie. raw slices seem to float. after blanching, they go straight into ice water to stop the cooking. adding garlic to the boiling water makes it yummier to my fish

I prefer french cut canned green beans, they sink on their own and there are never any leftovers to clean up the next day. Gold nuggets do require wood in their diet, but also eat meatier foods like frozen bloodworms occasionally.
Breeding is much more demanding than bristlenose, they need a strong flow of water into a cave. Nearly impossible to sex, and males are territorial so a large tank would be necessary to keep a group in hopes of them spawning. Check planetcatfish for more detailed breeding info.

Thanks, the tank has allot of drift wood. I put in some cucumber and romaine letuce last night. The blue phantom likes it but the gold nugget still only munches on the algea and drift wood.

Gold Nuggets are very challenging to breed(only done a few times). They are definitely much more demanding that ancistrus to keep. If you have breed BN plecos, I would recommend trying a more commonly bred species first before trying gold nuggets.

Yeah, cook it briefly and it will sink. This is what my old boss always did to feed his breeder plecos.
