My Tang Tank

As you can see, no tangs yet! LOL... but coming. also, the "plant" background is coming off in exchange for straight black. I have been planning all along to put occies in this tank along with the fish below... but I am beginning to reconsider. I may get the occies for another tank. main reason is I have come across a rather striking pleco (L213), and have 3 coming today to go in this tank. they put out a fairly nice bio-load, so putting a group of occies in with this stocking list might be pushing it a bit. anyway, what is planned at the moment is:

Pair of yellow calvus

trio of black comps (I am hoping they take up opposite sides of the tank for territories... not too worried aobut cross breeding, if it happens though, because I will not be trying to save and distribute any offspring. if they survive, they stay in the tank).

7 blue flash cyps (not the jumbo type)

3 L213 plecos

I am now on the fence, as I said above, regarding the occies. but at the same time, I do kind of want them in there... I dunno. Anyway, enough of my rambling... here are the pics, one with flash, one without flash...

Looking good man. The black background with the black gravel will really make the black comps stand out. I read somewhere that their black gets even blacker in that type of set up.

I just want to double check something... I am being given so much conflicting info, I am beginning to not know what to do. so... please... anyone experience with tangs... please give me an honest opinion of my intended stocking list. keep in mind I am not concerned about any hybridization of the altos, as I will not distribute them in the hobby. that said, are there other concerns with my stocking list, and if so, please tell me and also I am interested in suggestions, keeping in mind the yellow calvus and black comps are musts.

Thanks!

Is that a 4 foot tank?

If so, the first fish I would introduce would be the calvus and comp's with a divider in the middle. Let the calvus settle in one end and comp's in the other. Be sure to have a shell at the very ends of the tank for the females to claim. I would use eggcrate for a divider that way the fish can see each other thru it, this will give the 2 males a chance to see each other and you'll be able to tell if it's going to be safe to pull the divider. I wouldn't pull the divider for a while, make sure each is comfortable with thier territories. After the females have claimed the shells and if it appears the males won't try to kill each other, pull the divider on a friday evening so you can keep an eye on things all weekend. If that all works out, then you could add the cyp's, but I'd recommend paracyps for a 4 foot tank, the regular cyp's might be a little cramped as they like to cruise. As far as the pleco's... my calvus and comp's are hard on them. I personally wouldn't put an expensive pleco in with them.

I can't say that this will work, I would personally stick with either calvus or comps, shellies, and paracyps... but since you're pretty set on both... that's the way I would approach it. If the tank is under 4 ft, I definitely wouldn't try it.

Just my oppinions, based on my experiences. :)

hmmm... well, it is seeming more and more I need to now find a trade partner for the 7 blue flash cyps I am about to acquire. so... you think the occies will be fine in this setup then? also, what if I dropped cyps and paracyps altogether... do you think a pair of julies would then be okay, along with the altos and the occies?

part of me is considering using mustax mbete, instead of the yellow calvus, then keep the black comps... but man... I really wanted both. but maybe I just shouldn't tempt fate.

decisions, decisions...

nice set up rich.
thanks! figuring out this stocking thing has become an adventure, however! LOL...

I am scheduled to pick the altos up tomorrow morning, in Ellicott City. I really need to get my head wrapped around whether this is going to work or not. but the seller has told me this should work... I have bought from him before and I do trust him... but I am rather uncomortable with all of the warnings I have been receiving with this. haven't been this unsure of my stocking list in quite some time! LOL...

Okay... so, here is an update. the yellow calvus pair I am getting are young adults, already breeding. the three black comps are juveniles. does this mean this has a better chance, or lesser chance, of working?

also, I may be posting this in the marketplace section soon... but it would seem I will be getting 7 blue flash cyps (not the jumbo variety) that might not work so well in my setup. it would seem maybe paracyps would work better. that being the case, I might be interested in trading if anyone might have paracyps and might be interested in the blue cyps. while I do not have the actual fish yet, I do have pics of the actual fish somewhere. just mentioning it here for now, but I think I will post it in marketplace soon.

Thanks for all the advice... and please... anybody else, keep it coming. the more comments, the better educated I become! LOL...

I'm still assuming this is a 4ft tank... Do you have another tank on hand incase things don't work out? I think as long as you have some eggcrate to make a divider and you have another tank for a backup plan... try em out in the same tank... I would definitely keep them seperated for a while tho, give them both the chance to get real comfortable with thier territories.

dude I keep thinking I said that somewhere... sorry for not answering that yet. yes... standard 4 ft long 55 gallon tank.

I will take your advice, and see what happens then.
