I'm good for something, I guess.

Since I last saw them, though, I'm thinking that the rubescens have been mislabled; my guess is that they're actually German reds. Still a strain bred from A. Stuartgranti, but from Chipoka, not Maleri. (Honest mistake. Chipoka and Maleri are right next to each other.)

This post says that the fish that looks like the fish that Richard has (and I have, since I got some from him) is an established aquarium strain of Aulonocara Stuartgranti Chipoka. I've been calling it a Ruby Red, but the Web shots I've seen of the German Red look the most like my fish (and Richard's, too.)

So as a test to see if the cichlid forum post had it right, I googled "Aulonocara stuartgranti chipoka," and the images that turned up seem to match the descriptinog from the cichlid forum post: "In the lake, Aulonocara sp. 'Stuartgranti Chipoka' demonstrates a variable color variation[sic], ranging from sunflower yellow to fire-orange."

Here's a photo of the fish I got from Richard, which he's been breeding, and which is entered as A. rubescens. It's the same fish as in the original cichlid forum post, and all the other posts.

I've also seen a reference or two claiming the ruby red is really Aulonocara stuartgranti "maleri."

From what I gather, Maleri and Chipoka are located right next to each other, so it's possible that some strains of ruby red are descended from a very similar fish (or even the same fish, who knows?) taken from a location adjacent to Chipoka.

So you can call this fish "A. rubescens," or A. stuartgranti chipoka "German Red." In all probability it's the same fish. I think "stuartgranti chipoka 'German Red'" is the correct terminology, however. But if you don't want to change the listing from A. rubescens, then I don't think it matters much, because it's still the same fish. (The listing would just be incorrect.)

Ok so it's a case of line breeding? Is that what you are saying?

Pat does this line originally come from Ron? If so I think I will email him.

Yeah. What I'm saying is that it's not "Aulonocara stuartgranti Red Ruby Rubescens."

There is no such species.

It's a line bred strain of "Aulonocara sp. 'Stuartgranti Chipoka'. "

Strains have alternately been called "Ruby Red," "Rubescens," "Rubin Red," and "German Red."

I think the strain Richard and I have is called "German Red." That's harder to say, though.

But if you review the trail of links I left, I think you'll see what I mean. Compare the photos of all the fish in the links I sent, and then look at the photo of my fish (which comes from Richard's stock.) They're the same species: "Aulonocara sp. 'Stuartgranti Chipoka'. "

After I signed off on your BAP forms, I got curious about the fish, did some fun detective work on the Web and found those neat links that I posted for everyone.

The bottom line, though, is that you bred this fish and you deserve the points, whatever it turns out to be called.

I Don't remember where they originally came from. I have had them for about 5 years. May have been Ron but cant remember.

Yes a ruby red is a line bred fish. You don't find them in the lake. They have many names. The German Red, to me, has a more distinct blue face.

I have won Best in Show with two different Ruby Reds in two different shows.

We can always ask Ad in May about where he thinks they came from originally. Line from what fish.

I think I remember seeing the father of your fish years ago at Ron's.... but I don't know my peacocks well enough to be certain.

I'll leave it as "Ruby Red".

I know this fish has been debated for years on it's lineage. I really don't want to get into that aspect.

I had a chance to see Richards wonderful breeding facility. I was impressed and it made me feel better about my Multi Tank Syndrome or MTS for short.

Oh Yea! Thanx Sarah for finally posting my new babies (spawn).

You'd be surprised what a little Barry White music mixed in with some Styx/ Peter Frampton can do for you. Not including a little simulated Moon light and NLS food. Lots of babies! And lots of love of course;)

Who knows, it might just be my wonderful presence, right? Quick story, I was invited over to Sonny Disposition's fish room one day and as soon as I walked in his fish began to breed. No lie! Ask Sonny, he is my witness.

Sonny said," OMG Richard, as soon as you walked in all of my fish began to breed." He was amazed and so was I, and it was true. He never saw that behavior before. "It must be you Richard!" We began to laugh so hard. LOL!!!:D

So if you're having a problem breeding your fishies, have no fear Richard is here! Just have me over the house to visit your fish room and Shazam!. Nevertheless, I am not cheap so I recommend some or'derves and a couple bottles of wine would be suffice.:)))))))
