Vent it. If it is one little hole, and then another little hole, it's a male. If it's one little hole and one bigger hole, its a female. That's what I did with my yellow lab pair when I had to get rid of my sub-dominant males.

ohmigodness. I've never looked up a peacock's hiney to tell its gender!!
If you can't tell by the hint of color (and firefish might be difficult) I look at the anal fin. Rounded is girl, pointed is boy. I can't quite tell from these photos . . .

That's what I used to do when i had to sex cichlids. I did that when buying a red zebra at a new LFS and all of the employees were all like "Woah, little dude! How do you do that?!?!"
