Looking for a new camera

I have not had a camera for about a year and a half now and I have decided to purchase another one but I need some help. The camera I had before was a small Sonny digital camera and I would like to upgrade to something better this time around but the problem is I don’t know that much about the high-end cameras. I know a lot of you have Nikons so that’s where I started and I found two I like and one Cannon. Please give me advice and input thanks Josh.

I have heard good things about the D90, nothing yet on the D5000.

Check prices at B&H Photo.

Don't really like any of the lenses included with the kits. You might consider buying just a body and then spending the money on good quality glass.

What do you intend to use the camera for?

I really don;t like the lenses on any of them either and I was thinking of buy a better one. Someone told me I should get a micro lenses I need to look into this I don't really know what it does yet. I'm only going to take pics of my fish, events and then move to nature pics. What combo do you think I should go with, body and lenses? Thanks for the help I really have no idea what to do.

A 18-50mm or 24-70mm (macro) lens is a good lens for taking fish pics.

The D90 is a great camera, plus it's a Nikon :)
Even has HD video!

For fish photos the D90, Nikon 60mm micro and remote flash will be just fine.

I also have a 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 in my bag.

Costco has the Nikon D5000 all kitted out for about $1100 - didn't look close at the lenses that came with it.

I prefer Nikon myself, but the Rebel is a good camera, too. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them. You should probably go to the store and handle some of them, to see how you like the feel, where the buttons are etc. That's how I ended up going with the D70 about 4 years ago - it felt right in my hands.

Should I go to Ritz Camera store and tell them I want a D90 body with a 60mm micro or is there a better place to buy them?

Check out the website he linked you to - B&H Photo - I've heard nothing but good things about them.

I would go for the D90 over the D5000, simply because the D5000 (like the D40 and D60) does not have an internal focus motor. This limits your lens choices, if you want auto focus.

Jumbie, go to the store and test out the camera you feel the most comfortable with. But I would personally buy online, a lot cheaper than in stores.

Josh, dude. Those are all awesome cameras... I was in your shoes just a few months ago. Decided that there was about a 90% chance that I would never need *that* much of a camera and went with a D80 (now discontinued, replaced by the D90 but you can buy used all over the place like I did). Just a thought. I am not an expert at all, but have a bit of photography background (mother was a portrait photographer and I used to do a lot of stuff... when cameras still had film LOL). The D80 is still more camera than I can use, but plenty to grow into. The previous posts are all spot on about the lenses though, that'll make a night and day difference in your pics.

I feel like I have no business adding to any photography thread with the amount of incredibly talented and knowledgeable folks on this forum!! LOL But thought someone should maybe point out the used/lesser option. Save some money on the camera and get better lenses :) Or better fish to take pictures of!! :)

Mmmmm. Macro lens. How many more months until Santa comes?
