Lighting

I am looking to get a new lighting set up for my tank. Only because the t5 ho I have now is creating too much heat! My tank gets down to 79.5 in the morning and up to 81 during the day while the light is on.

I am looking for recommendations on a decent light for a fair price, if there's any suggestions it would be appreciated!

I have the 6ft version of the second link listed. Been very happy with it & it is built really well. I got it from the same seller I linked it to. Had it in 3 days. I'd prob send him a message to see if he would set up a buy it now with a single light of the second link posted since that's for a 2 pack Deal. Mines on a 180 & it covers very very good & has a nice shimmer & no Heat..

It's your money...

...but a couple of spacers at either end of your current set-up to raise the light up an inch (or two) off the canopy would allow the heat to bleed off instead of transferring it to the tank. I do this on most of my tanks for this reason and because it keeps the fixtures/bulbs cooler which very likely makes them last longer. Wooden blocks work great as will just about a pair of anything else...

I have the heaters all the way down. I bought these stands offline that prop it up. The house will be 74 at night, sometimes gets up to 80 in the day but the tank stays at a high temp..

This may seem like the obvious answer but have you thought about removing the heater or one of the heaters if you have more than one? If your house is 80 degrees during the day you probably don't need the heater.

I have all of my tanks in my basement which is many degrees cooler than the rest of my house, in the summer time I still have to dial all of my heaters back.

I will try to pull the heaters all the way out. It doesn't get sun from the window. We always have curtains closed. It's a 4 bulb light but I only have 2 on at a time. Lights only on from 3p-10p.

Just unplugged them, I had them set at 75. The house gets low as 74 degrees at night and up to 81 in the day. We will see what happens now I guess

Our big tanks (4x2x21") 110s behave similarly in the Summer. They have temperature controllers on the heaters also linked to nightlights so we know when they are on and they are NEVER on in the Summer.

The tanks are lit by 3x54w T5HO and have sumps with Eheim pumps in them. The cold water out of our taps is about 80F in the Summer and the combination is enough so that they never cool down, they just stay about 80-83F all Summer. The tanks also have canopies which likely help keep them warm as well.

This is a pretty common occurrence, if you read in the marine/reef world they often have major heat issues - sometimes necessitating chillers as well as heaters. Fortunately our Africans don't really mind it a bit warmer so we just leave them be.

We did change our 55g to LED lighting in a tank without a hood and it is notable what a difference it makes. Not so much in temperature as this tank is smaller (and less thermally efficient) and never had a hood, but it used to have 2x39w T5s lighting it and now has LEDs sitting about 12" above the tank. What is interesting is that there is virtually no hard water staining on the tank lids now which I attribute to the lids being much cooler so there is basically no evaporation of water that deposits hard water stands on the lids. It was a very noticeable effect.
