Does anyone have any good practical experience with these fish? So far all is well....eating everything and well behaved with each other and tank mates. I'm wondering if they are fast or slow growers and what size is realistic for male/female? They are in my 210 which is heavily decorated with rock...lots of hiding places. Tank mates range from a handful of large peacocks and haps to several small tangs. (2 pair of albino brichardi and 1 marlieri that stubbornly refuses to be caught)

Always love to hear any opinions or experience.

Sarah (Longstocking) has lots of experience with these guys. They're beautiful fish but pretty aggressive. I remember mine getting to 5-6" in a big tank.

They're harem mouthbrooders, so technically not a pairing fish. Males can be really brutal on the ladies. I ended up with a single male when I grew out the first group of fry I got fry Sarah.

I had these in a 125g.
At first all was fine. The dominant male bred with the females...and then they bred again.
After the second successful spawn them male decided to kill each Horei in the tank one by one.

Definitely a fish that I want no part of every again.

Yup. Those guys were pretty aggressive. One of the most aggressive fish I've had in my african tanks. Pretty fish, though.

I kept mine with other fish... they weren't as bad if they were not the top dog in the tank. But I had many of them in the tank. I wouldn't try them with just a pair. 6 or more is best. I kept them with Tropheus, Petrochromis, Simochromis, Limnotilapia... the big nasties from lake tang

Thanks to all for the info.....this may end up being a good lesson in doing my homework a little better. I only had the opinion of 1 person who keeps them from the lfs where I bought them. I'll watch them closely.....I really don't like troublesome tank mates...:(
