"THE ALL POWERFUL Q !!
my male is a year old is approx. 8-9". i dont know anyone else who has one but i have some questions. whats the growth rate? because i was expecting him to grow like my oscars at like 1"-1.5" a month after he reached 5" but its been slow. i give him a very balanced diet of nls, fresh worms, and misc treats. any ideas on this or i just rushing for him to be a behemoth? thanks!

What size tank is he in?

8-9" in a year isn't too shabby!

More water changes, warmer water, more frequent feeding, and higher protein foods will pack on the size...

Trout chow is messy but works. Just mix it with something to enhance colors.

Live worms (earthworms, superworms, redworms) are also great for carnivores.

I agree with Matt, I think that it all depends on the size of the tank he’s housed in. A few years back I had 3 Managuenses in a 75g tank (they were about 3-3.5" each). I kept the temp around 83-84 and I was power feeding them high protein foods like Krill, live ghost shrimp, frozen shrimp from the grocery store (thawed out), worms, and crickets. I tried to stay away from gold fish and guppies from LFS, but I did feed some fancy tail guppies that kept breeding in one of my plant tanks every once and a while. I was doing 50% water changes every 4-5 days. I think was about 13-14 months later when I had taken a picture of them and when I sold them to someone who had a 240g they measured somewhere around 14".

Market shrimp are an excellent food as well...no reason to wait. I feed them (cut up) to a lot of my smaller new world cichlids. Raw is better.

You're doing everything right... I might even lower the temp a bit...

Trout chow is basic aquaculture food - super hight in protein, really cheap, kind of greasy. Looks a lot like dog food. Fish farmers use it... I think that this is the stuff:

Make sure if you are going to buy it that you look at the two pound bag instead of the 5 pounder. The two lb is $6.25 and the five lb is $23.95....

I've kept jags in a 55 with some red devils and jewel fish-they were fed nothiong but Doromin and earthworms, with an occasional swatted fly thrown in. Weekly water changes until they all got to about 4-5 inches, then every couple days. They grew fast. Unfortunately, the red devils paired off rather quickly, as did the jewel fish, and the jags were caught in the middle. This happened during a heat wave while I was away for a weekend. I think the jewels and devils ended up feeding on the lone jag carcass. Had eggs on both ends of the tank when I got back, and a half eaten jag. Oh well. But I did end up with many devils and jewels. It was very interesting to watch, until I decided to divide the tank.

My Jag went from 3" to 9" in about 4 months in a 220 on a diet of Hikari Bio Gold/ New life spectrum large fish/ krill/shrimp diet.

You probably saw my jag on the front cover of the last issue of the Biotope. I have had him in a 40 gallon tank by himself since about 1995. He is now about 12 inches. So the tank size has stopped him growing larger. The National Aquarium in DC use to have one that was at least 20 inches and had lived for more than 10 years also.

I feed him live fish, basically the culls from other fish I raise. A lot of goldfish, convicts, etc. When I run out of live fish, I feed him pellets that are above 30 % protein. I did find that he refuses to eat corydoras catfish, I wonder why. LOL

I am soooooo disappointed in you. How could you think that the Bond car was a Jaguar? That Sir, is an Aston Martin DBS......we may need to look for a new movie critic....

Rob

I thought Ford had sold out on Aston Martin and were only a minority shareholder these days.....Louis Vitton was supposedly the lead on buying it from Ford.

I stand corrected, you're absolutely right, how could I have forgotten my favorite car the Aston Martin.

We'll, like I tell my daughter all the time...Daddy is usually 99% right. :D

It won't happen again this year I promise.
