I have Fry!!

Hi, my trials of trying to get spawn have paid off in a really weird way. Yesterday when I traded out my 45g for a 55, I used a bucket to hold the gravel. The last bit of gravel from the 45 was still in the bucket with 6" of water. I come back from Aquamania and I was about to pour the bucket out but there were FREE SWIMMERS in there. The problem is I don't think they are angels... There are only two other fish they could be, an australian rainbow or diamond tetras. Either way I am so excited!

Congrats! That's a great surprise to come home to.

Diamonds

Had a group of a while back and babies kept showing up in tanks that didn't have any adults in them - came from moving plants/Java moss among tanks - pretty prolific tetra if I'm any judge.

My guess would be diamond tetras. They have been know to provide a few "volunteers" when happy and kept in a tank with some fry cover.

I have confirmed they are the tetras. Now I have a bigger problem. They are still in the bucket. I don't feel comfortable moving them because they are still incredibly tiny. I have been dropping 5-50micron golden pearls. But the water is so dirty I have been cup draining and adding for my water changes (I don't want to suck any fry in the siphon.) How can I safely move the fry to my waiting 10 gallon without transfering all the crap at the bottom too?

You might be able to extract the fry with a turkey baster. I've had good success with that. I'm not wild about netting very small fry.

+1. I sometimes siphon fry out of tanks into a net resting on the rim of a bucket.
