I picked up a few of these Jewels recently from Batfish and have had them in a 15 gallon with some Pelvicachromis grow outs so that they can put on a little more size before I put them into a more suitable home. Well they started to color up really nicely last week so I thought....cool....lookin good.

Today, I caught them spawning....

I must admit they look a bit like my H. Lifalili though....I'll be running some photos by Anton before I pass along any offspring.

I seem to recall the ones I had being gold with a blue head. They were quite peaceful and liked soft water.

Did you get any H. sp. Guinea II? Those are the big (all gold) ones.

Yeah, I believe the Guinea II are the gold ones.

Based on the pics I've seen online, the Guinea I form is described as being mostly a dark red (looks to me like a muddy red rather than a bright red) and I think depending on how the camera flash hits the gill spots and dorsal edges are anywhere from blue to green. I see more green online, but some appear blue. They're also a bit deeper bodied than some of the other jewels.

The so all seem to have a dark vertical stripe that's quite visible in the dorsal fin so I plan to get out the good camera and flashlight tonight to take a look.

So far, these are still quite young so they haven't really finished developing yet. But, their stress colors are quite different than my H. lifalili. Not that that's diagnostic, but it makes me think they're not quite the same as what I've already got.

just a quick follow-up pic...I got the "better" camera out tonight.

These are definitely not the same as my lifalili or gutattus.....I've sent these pics to Anton to get his opinion.

Verdict is still out on what these Jewels really are. I've sent pics to Anton and he's informed me that there are 3 different jewels in the Kolente area. Guinea I, Guinea II, and a third kind. He needs pics of the fish in full parenting coloration to really make a decision about what they are.

These spawned again tonight, so maybe if this batch of fry makes it, I'll be able to send some more pics.

In the meantime, here's a pic of the eggs laid on the top of a pleco cave and the parents guarding it.

WHAT is in your water? You just got those like a week ago, and they're spawning already?!

A little more than a week ago. Sheesh. Besides, they spawned the first time right after I brought them home....we should be asking, what is in YOUR water!

So what ARE these? They have Anton stumped for the time being!

Wait, did you get the ones from the tank on the lower right? I've been looking for those.

That's Hemichromis batfishaquaticsisawesomeii.

So it turns out that out of the six I got from Josh, I have THREE PAIRS! Way to go on the ratios, Batfish!

Oh, and they ALL SPAWNED AT ONCE. So I have three batches of fry.....and they are quite prolific....there are at least a zillion babies in each batch.

I think they may be the most intense red (under their chins) of any of the jewels I keep.

I've got another email in to Anton to see if he has any insight into what they really are. He had asked me to send another batch of pictures when they were guarding fry since that's when jewels are in their "official" coloration for identification.

You're on quite a roll here. Has the temperature dropped in your tanks with the cooler weather?

not really, but I did get extremely busy with "live happens" stuff the past few weeks so I was overdue on waterchanges (seems to be a theme with my spawns).
