Help with Cichlids, please?!

Went to the lfs and I noticed two very lovely deep red Cichlids protecting about 50-60 tiny wigglers!

What I want to know is, are they male and female/pair? Both are very red and both chased off the other 3 dull Cichlids and kept sucking in fry and placing them back in the center. One has a black spot on the tail, the other doesn't. I bought both, unfortunately, the lady could not catch the fry, they vanished into the gravel.

Please tell me that means they are a pair!

One is doing well, it's red again, other still needs some time. Both are swimming together and exploring their new tank.

Here are some quick, poor pictures.

Well, in the store tank, they had 3 small light colored Jewels that were hiding in the top corner of the tank. Then these two, both the same crazy red were in the center of the fry bubble. Both went off to chase the lighter colored fish and both picked fry up and placed them back in the center. Both did that very twitchy motion to keep water moving also.

Later in the day yesterday, they started arguing in their new tank. It's heavily planted, no plant destruction yet. Today, I got more plants for my birthday Sunday and I moved the 'cave' so the back hole is usable. I placed a long plant leaf in the 'cave' so it looked like it was growing out of it. I was hoping that would make them go into it. It worked!

But they are still fighting, well, the darker is chasing off the other. Should I worry that this pair is no longer ok with each other? Should I have bought one of those 3 light ones that were hiding? Would that of helped these two? What can I do for them to get them to like each other again and possibly spawn?

There is no damage on either fish, btw. They ate frozen Bloodworms very happily, but flake was not liked at all.

The bigger paler of the two has been trying to lure the female(?) into the 'cave'. So I guess this might become the Jewel Cichlid fry journal instead of just a question.

Anything I should do to improve their life so they will spawn?
I've been changing 5 gallons every other day.

Try cool water at a regular water change time. Changing 5 gallons a day isnt doing any thing. Sounds like their were a pair but need to acclimate to their new surroundings. They will nibble your plants. The other fish were in to top corner because they were being chased away by the parents you bought. Unless you have a sure outlet for the fry use them as feeders or cull them. I have a breeding pair and have had a hell of a time getting rid of the fry. They are now juveniles and I can't even give them away. if they are in the same tank with the fish listed in your sig don't be suprised if some of your other fish turn up dead or eaten. Jewels are better off kept with slightly larger aggressive cichlids as they have the potential to be very aggressive.

Many cichlid pairs "argue" after they lose a spawn. Usually the male beats on the female because he wants to breed again. The arguing can be slight (chasing) to extreme where one fish is killed by the other. If it is too bad, you can use a divider till she is ready to spawn and then they should get along again.

They are the only fish in their tank. I normally won't do w/c other than once a week. They have not touched the plants at all and all are doing well, even growing.
I know why the other fish were hiding, that was obvious. I just said that to give more info about them and to find out if they are a pair.
The lighter colored, slightly bigger of the two chases the small bright red one around still, but some days, they get along and explore together.

Ugh, came home from work and the little red female(?) was stuck to the filter intake, fins all torn up. She/hes alive, had to put her in a divided container, the other attacked it after I got it free from the intake.

WTH?!?

Sounds like one is ready to breed and the other is not. Happens sometimes. I had a male HRP that killed his female after about 6 successful spawns.

Place the tattered fish in a small (10 gallos or less). Quaritine tank with an air stone and dose with Belarus and the fish should heal fine. If you don't use the air stone you may suffocate your fish. When you reintroduce the fish try to rearrange the tank and turn the lights out. That's all I can offer. My pair don't have those problems. If you want some more I have a several you can have.

More Jewels? Or?
I have a half gal plastic jar with holes. I placed it in their tank and put her in it until I can find a divider for the tank that fits. The jar is right in front of the output of the filter, so the water is forced through the holes as much as possible. I added salt and raised the temps a bit. I hope she makes it though.. Otherwise, I only have 8 days left to return them. Poor femie. Maybe if I had other Jewels, it would of helped even aggression....

Sorry the pair did not work out for you. Don't give up though! The breeding behavior of cichlids is really fun (and frustrating) to experience.

No we got ours from DangerChicken and yes they are crazy red. Honestly if I don't find somewhere to put these things soon, they might find an untimely demise:( We need tank space horribly
