Good Morning,
I'm new to your forum, but I've been keeping fish since I was a kid. For about three years, I was keeping a reef tank of mostly soft corals in my*29 gallon Biocube. Unfortunately,my husband was laid off and I had to break down my reef. About a year ago I saw some Lake Tanganyikan Cichids in my LFS and went home and set my old reef tank back up, adding things as I could afford it. Then I cycled it and went to get my fish. I wanted to stock it with two Neolamprologus Brichardi, but at the (bad) advice of my LFS I got 1 N. Brichardi, 1 lamprologus leleupi, and some sort of Julidochromis. The Brichardi was the largest of the three and eventually the last "man" standing. The Brichardi did well for many months, but jumped onto the drip tray of my filter one night and I didn't find him until it was too late.
I'd like to try again with a more appropriate stocking list.
My set up:
29 gallon BioCube
108 watts PC lighting (I'm running only 72 watts on a 6 hour cycle right now and I have an upgraded heat shield and fans)
Eco Complete Cichlid Sand
About 20 lbs of tufa rock
Plants: Anubias barteri, Anubias nana, Elodea, Microsorum pteropus 'Windelov, Moneywort, Alternanthera reineckii, and moss balls
273 gph turn over
Trickle filter
Water Parameters:
pH: 8.4-8.6
dKH: 7
Nitrites: 0
Ammonia: 0
Nitrate: 5 ppm
SG: 1.003 (I don't add salt to the tank, I guess it leaches out of the silicon or something from being a salt setup for so long)
This is a pretty stable tank. I don't use any chemical buffering or filtering. Being in Florida with our lime aquifers gives me pretty good Cichlid keeping water. Currently, this tank houses only an OB Peacock who is really quite a nasty mannered fish. I haven't figured out what to do with it, but he will not be calling my tank home for much longer.*
I also have a Betta Mahachai tank with 4 females which I rather enjoy. They were little juvies when i got them and I've had them for almost four years. They are really fun little fish. They are shy and hide most of the time, but they come out and say hello if you sit next to the tank for a few minutes.
I hope to learn a lot from your forum.
Thanks,
Jessica
