Heater help

I've never had an issue with keeping my tank up to temp but I moved to a new place and its always cold. I can't keep my tank above 69. So I've got this old heater I was given with a tank but I've never tried it. I've heard of people electrocuting their fish and I don't want to lose my new babies... Any way to check it or should I just break down and buy a new one?

You could test it in a bucket of water, as long as the heater doesn't touch the sides of the bucket.

Unless its a Jaeger or relatively new, may not be worth the risk. If it's the kind that clamps onto the rim of the tank, put it in the recycling bin. Decent ones are under $15 online from Ken's Fish, et al. Am having good luck with the Fluval M series and they're the most aesthetically pleasing heaters on the market.

If you're not using a canopy or if its not a good seal, a tank will bleed a whole lot of heat off the top surface. If that's the case, could be what you really need are glass tops - keeps the fish in the tank as well.
