Gotta start somewhere

Hey, my name's Geoff. I'm in Northern VA.
I've been into African cichlids for a few years now- nothing too serious though.
I just upgraded to a 180g tank, so now just seeing what other people are up to and trying to get ideas for stocking. It might be nice to find others in the area to trade or buy fish, so this doesn't look so empty:

Welcome aboard Geoff! Looks like an Old World tank. There are plenty of folks here that can help you out.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good people here on the site. You should check out our next meeting in September.

Great aquascaping, man. I'm a Malawi guy, myself (though I've been branching out a bit lately).

You looking for all males or are you thinking breeding groups?

Welcome to CCA. Great looking tank
Come to the meetings, you'll find plenty of fish to stock it with.

Thanks. It was my first attempt at a DIY background, and I got mixed results (one of the sections came loose.) Also my first time going with sand instead of crushed coral. Not sure if I will ever do that again.

I've never been one of those guys who commits to "all male" or "all Malawi" tanks. I've just thrown some un-sexed juvies in and whatever happens happens. (Come to think of it.... I haven't had any fish breeding in the past 6+ years...hmmm....)
Right now I think I have a mix of sexes and a mix from three different lakes. I was planning to make the 180 an all Malawi tank, and convert my old 55 to an all Tang tank. Instead I've just put all the big guys in the big tank and left the juvies in the 55.
Breeding groups sound appealing, but not sure if that means I have to limit the variety. Guess that's why I'm here: seeing what others are doing.

Where are the fish? :)

Welcome to the club.

Nice looking tank, by the way!

Where are the fish, indeed.

I placed a big order from an online vendor... which turned out to be a major debacle. I'll give them credit: there were no DOA's, but I now have pretty much the same number of fish that I had before I ordered. I still have no explanation for the mass die off, but that's for another thread. For now, I'm just licking my wounds and starting over.

Wow, I should've read your thread before my last post. Losing 25 or so juveniles is nothing compared to what happened to you. That sucks.

I loved your stock too. Somehow my tank seems smaller than yours (maybe it's the background), but your tank is kinda what I had in mind for my own.

Some of the ones I lost were: B nototaenia, N livingstonii, C rhoadesii, fire haps, ngaras, and I don't even remember or want to think what else.
