I have decided to get rid of my group of tropheus to cut down on tanks. These fish are not super common in the hobby and are very active and fun to watch. I received this via our own fischfan13 almost 2 years ago and when I first got them they hid around the first 3-4 months in rocks and would never come out. Since then they are now very very social fish and will even swarm around your hand when you put it in the tank which is pretty neat considering they are wild caught fish.
I currently have a 220, 180, 125 and two 40 breeders set up and just do not have the time to keep up the maintenance and feedings etc of all of them. I do not necessarily want to get rid of this group but they were 3rd in line behind my frontosa and my haps.
There is an archived post on ECC of pictures of all the fish being vented. 2 have died in the past 2 years. One early on from territory fights and the other unknown. You can find that post here: http://forums.eastcoastcichlids.org/showthread.php?t=6716
So you can see there, you are getting a group of almost a perfect 50/50 split male female, with a tad more females. I would guess that it is 7m/10f. In my tank I always have 2-3 beautiful colored up guys, ironically there are 3 sets of rock groups.
The fish were in a 90 gallon tank for about 6 months when I orginially got them from fischfan13. I wondered upon a 125 gallon and it wasnt until then I saw breeding activity. There are now females holding every once in a while however they do not hold full term. I have stripped twice. Once I got 5 eggs, the other time i got 4. I lost them all to fungus. My point here is that, THEY DO SPAWN. I would recommend a 6 foot tank, but it's not technically necessary with this number of tropheus. A 75 or 90 is plenty of room.
I took the photos and the video below yesterday. I need to get rid of the fish and will sell the tank also if you're interested, however the tank sale is dependent on either you buying the fish, or at least someone buying them before.
I will not split the group up. You dont see these around Wild very often and this is a nice split of a group and are breeding. If you're looking for a fun group of fish to look at that regularly school together in the tank and are very very active these are amazing.
I am asking a $300 for the entire adult wild group.
