I offer mine both shells and rock piles. They will actually excavate a bit under the rocks to get a nice snug cave going. I find that if I have a lone pair in a 10, they prefer the rocks. If mine are in a mixed tank with other rock dwellers, they take the shells. Mine also like the calvus caves you can get from South Central Cichlids.

That's exactly what happen to this pair lol, I had them in a 20gallon with rocks and they loved it but when I put them in the 55gallon they used the shells.

These guys are still available, nice prolific breeding pair of caudopunctatus. These guys are protecting there fry from a 55gallon full of other fish and they are the smallest fish in the tank, asking $45 for the pair and the babies. I need them gone by the meeting because I'm changing the African cichlid tank into a community tank so if they don't sell by then I will have to put them in a 20gallon.
