Fry predation and BN plecos?

Just curious how actively very small BN plecos will hunt down fry. I'm thinking one of my ruby reds may spit soon and I may be tempted to rescue some fry. The only other tank for them would have 8 small BN plecos.

I have had good success with African Cichlid fry and BN plecos. I think any fry that are free swimming should be fine. You might want another container if you strip earlier. A lot of times if they aren't quite free swimming, I put them in a critter keeper with an airstone and float them in another tank.

You just make sure there is enough green stuff like canned green beans for those BN and your fry will be fine.

Nice meeting you at ACA by the way.

BN pleco's of any size won't bother any fry, though they're quite liable to be eaten themselves if they're small enough.

I'm not planning on stripping the mother(s) and have build several "fry piles" of small stones in their tank to protect fry if the mom is smart enough to spit into them. (My labs previously did this successfully). But if I can grab a few, I might try to raise them in my (soon to be set up 20) with 8 2" or less green dragon BNs, who are very happy with the level of algae wafers, zuccini and cucumber they are getting!

Actually, I"m hoping the ruby reds spit soon. Both mothers were quite small when they started holding and I"m a bit worried about them. But unless they seem really in distress, I"m not going to chase them around a planted tank and try quite pitifully to catch them.

Holly, I wouldn't worry about the ABN going after the fry. You saw my ABN horde tank and the adults don't mess with the 1/4" baby plecos at all.

If anything, I think that the peacocks would be more of a concern. With the small rock piles though, you should be fine. :)
