FREE CICHLIDS

I have around 10 hybrid HRP x Calico Convict cichlids, which will go in my creek if not rehomed on Saturday at the meeting. I put them in the auction on my group auctions but I will take them off. They are free. Anyone want them?

do not put them in your creek. I hope that was a joke. That is why there are so many laws limiting what we CAN get. If you cannot give them away, at least humanely euthanize the fish.

Woah, whaddaya mean in your creek? You're not saying that you'll release them into the wild, are you?

That was a joke, guys. No need to worry. I will probably set up a bucket in my garage if there are no takers, and feed worms and algae. John Moore have Mr the idea. :)

Please please please do NOT dispose of your fish in a local water way. Do some research on snakeheads in MD/VA waterways, pythons in the everglades, and plecos and tilapia in waterways around the world. Non-native species tend to love throwing off the delicate ballance of an ecosystem...

I really wouldn't do that, guys. Our creek is one of the only major trout-producing creeks in Frederick. I will see who wants them. Hope you guys are not mad at me for pulling that joke on you!:) I know all about the snakehead fish and the Japanese crayfish in our area!

Or creek's crayfish for killed off before I was born by the stupid brown Japanese crayfish. They are a yucky dark brown color, while our native species are gray.

Zach -- Jokes often don't go over well via computer forums, thus the outpouring of response to your "joke." You also got a big response because, to put it delicately, there are a lot of idiots in the world who do stupid things like dump their fish in creeks or flush them down the toilet so while it appears to have been a joke with you, it's not always a joke with some people. 'nuff said on that . . .

Leave them in the auction, make sure they're clearly labelled as hybrids, and designate them as club donations. You may find someone wants them.

Creek-dumping jokes aside, there's a second lesson here: The vast majority of fishkeepers are not fans of hybrids. But that's a discussion for another day.

What happens when they get flushed?

Not to kick the dead horse any more, but while we're at it, some aquatic plants can have the same potential negative effect that fish can. Whenever you're doing any trimming or disposing, make sure the plants are either dried out or sealed in a plastic bag... or go into the toilet.

Not so fast

They get destroyed by chemicals and filters.

Only possible if they get as far as the treatment plant...most likely die of shame and humiliation first to say nothing of really low to non-existent oxygen levels. :D

If a species (say crocodiles and/or alligators for instance) were to find a suitable niche (say a sewer system full of rats) they'd have no reason to move "downstream" and would never come into contact with "chemicals and filters". Additionally and perhaps more importantly, a very large number of US cities including major ones still have combined sewer/run-off systems meaning that when it rains heavily the treatment plants are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of effluent and the excess flow is shunted directly into local waterways or the ocean - no filters or chemicals would be encountered making it a dandy way to inadvertently spread potentially invasive species or disease-vectoring individuals. Toilets are for organics, and as a rule the living things that go in them should be limited to microbes and insects.

Thanks guys for your advice. I am sorry the joke got out of hand, and I really did not mean to offend anyone. I really would never do something so stupid as to release my fish because 1: I dont want them to die, they are tropical, and 2: If they do survive, they would potentially kill off many specimens that I fish for at my creek, and be the next "Snakehead"-like "invasion. I will most likely be late to the meeting because of a lacrosse game, so no auction. I can give them to you, Jon, if you want them. I need a taker lined up by Saturday, I am getting some new fish! (WOOHOO!!!) And most likely some tropical aquatic plants in the auction.

No worries, Zach. This has turned into quite a valuable discussion thread imo.

Sam, living in Atlanta for 5 years, one would have thought the whole combined-system would have crossed my mind prior to recommending flushing plants down the toilet. Yeah, on second thought, as a rule of thumb - dispose of plants by drying them or putting in plastic bags i the garbage. Ma bad. :)
