Flowerhorns

Kind of a controversial topic to throw out there on your 5th post..

Not sure you realize that this is the forum for a cichlid club based in the Maryland/DC/Virginia area (and not just some random Internet forum). We have monthly meetings, BBQs and get together's.

My opinion is that flowerhorns are like the other "fancy" fish: intentionally bred to enhance the aesthetic qualities that some people value: more color, aggression, longer fins, bigger heads, more sparkles, etc. than wild-type brethren.

Do I keep any? Nope.

Do I understand the appeal? Sure. "Fancy" bettas can be prettier than wild-type ones. Same with "fancy" livebearers, OB Peacocks, bright orange discus, koi vs. carp, etc, etc.

Does it bother me that other people do? Not at all.

Is mislabeling of flowerhorns a problem? Sure is. But no more of a problem than mislabeling of "red devils" or other "pure" fish.

Is there a reliable way to differentiate fish that are line bred for characteristics vs. hybridized? Nope. It's all "fancy" in my book...

Not that you're in the area, but there are likely people with the full range of views on the issue within the CCA.

Matt

P.S. I'm not a fan of your username either. But C'est la vie.

I feel pretty out of place here...... Wanting to connect with others that share in my LOVE for fish. And that's why I joined.
There is an app that groups 5 fish forums together and when I saw cichlids I figured I'd give it a go. My name isn't meant to offend anybody and I didn't create it in hopes I making friends because of it. It's a joke with my family and friends. My dad and I are pretty involved in the hobby where we are.
Enjoy your Sunday everybody!

I like your flowerhorn. Are you askng if we think it is a hybrid? I'm no expert, but the flowerhorns I have seen have more of a pinkish face that match the pink tones in their bodies. I have always like fish with Coqs (horns). My local fish store has one that actually seems to enjoy being pet on its coq.

Flowerhorns in general are all man-made hybrids. But I am not a big fan of hybrids, myself.

I was just asking what people's opinions about them are. I believe mine is a Zhen Zhu. I know they are man-made and less appealing to some, however I just really like the colors, and markings. Mine is also very interactive and feeds from my hand.

Put him in a tank with some of my manzanita, and then everyone can.... Matt, how long will I be banned for if I finish this sentence?

I think your fh is nice...
I myself own hybrids but I wouldn't say to much about them here because you might **** somebody off because they got tricked on a fish that was supposed to be a trimac but turned out to be a fh. Sign up for monsterfishkeepers if you didn't already.
Once again Nice looking Flowerhorn :)

In general I'm not a hybrid guy, but I don't have anything against most of them, personally. Frankly, I've seen a flowerhorn or two that I've almost purchased... one from HOT even (stood there for probably 45 minutes debating with myself if I should buy it... LOL). Only hybrid I truly despise off the top of my head are those ridiculous parrot fish... but even still, to each his own. All that said, I think your flowerhorn looks nice!
