I have doing as much reading on the fish I have so I know everything about them. I understand that the Yellow Labs should have more of a vegetable base food and the Johanni will be fine with reg cichlid food. I currectly have Spectrum Grow pellets from my last tank. Ill keep those for when i have fry but my question is what to get for the Yellow Labs and the Johanni. Do i get algea pellets? help me out guys? And if anyone has some willing to sell that I need let me know! Thanks

I like NLS (New Life Spectrum) and Extreme and Color and Tropheus Lovers flake from Kensfish.com. Works for everybody :)

Matt's fish probably look better than mine, LOL, but the labs and melanochromis you got from me regularly got Hikari sinking catfish pellets and occasional flake. I've tried various varieties of the cichlid pellets, and my fish don't seem to like them. YMMV. Oh, I've also tried blanched zuchinni, which they love, but the problem with that is my monster pleco ("Plucky") gets to them first and scarfs them down.

But you're right about the veggie diet - while generalizations sometimes get you in trouble, and every species is different, in general, mbuna are algae grazers and do not do well if you feed them lots of bloodworms, for example.

Right Chris_todd I read that too much proteins can really hurt them. Any reading the indo on the Spectrum Grow i have it has like 54% rpotein so i am very warry feeding them that. I do seem them grazing on the algea on the holey rock but would like to get something else i can feed them daily. So You had good luck with boiling zuchinni? Would you leave it in there or take it out after a bit? I was also thinking of just using algea waffers. what u think?

With our pleco, there was never a problem with zuch - he'd eat it all (usually in just a few hours)! But I would guess any that's still there the next day, remove it before it fouls the tank. That's just a guess, though - independent confirmation anyone?

Cucumber works well, Omega Sea Algae wafers are the best. You can also try the algae sheets from the Asian and health food stores. Petco sells a bag of alagae seaweed for 10 bucks.

Have you ever tried to grow algae on smooth rocks?

Which nls formula?

To be honest, they're all pretty similar. I like the cichlid formula or the Thera A, but if you go to their website and check out their forum, the moderators basically answer threads saying the different formula pellets are pretty much interchangeable.

Size of the pellet is the most important factor, I think. Go small.... 1mm or 1.5mm.

I like NLS Thera A because it has some garlic in it... which (allegedly) helps combat internal parasites. Fish also seem to like the taste (which is the case with everything from NLS)...

If you ever want to be confronted with too many choices regarding which food to feed your fish, just check out www.kensfish.com

I'll go out on a limb and say that water changes are more important than one high quality food or another :)
