from my experience, dont try and use subtrate to buffer your water. just use baking soda. its super cheap and will keep your pH more consistent. the problem with substrate is that it take a long time for it to buffer water, so when you do a water change you add a bunch of water with a low pH and then it has to gradually inch back up. so you start with water in your tank at 8+, do a big water change and make it lower to around 7, then it inches back up to 8 again. then you do another water change.

i like to just add baking soda to my water as i do a water change, that way the pH is constant at 8+ and doesnt go up and down. i think its better for the fish in the long run. plus baking soda is super cheap

saw your other posts about the cost of baking soda. go to a feed store, you should be able to get a 50lb bag of it really cheap. i bought mine years ago from a feed store. think i got a 50lb bag for about $8 or so, but that was a while ago and in florida,

so you use baking soda to manage your ph, i never heard of that technique before. it sounds as if you have been doing it for awhile with of success. i need to do some research on this technique

Baking soda is a weak base, so it will give you a pH of around 8. You will increase your hardness, so you don't want to go completely overboard. I think cichlid-forum has a DIY "African Salt" mix that is a mix of Baking powder and Epsom Salts(to increase hardness).

and pooping as well!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but...

I really have to wonder about that. Just because Epsom salts are a laxative in mammals, why would they be one in fish?

Yes, I hear people say it all the time....but so far, all I've read about is anecdotal. It seriously think it's urban legend. :D
