Fin Damage

Spine

What can you do to help a fish with fin damage. I have several fish that have tattered dorsal fins, after being beat downs by tank mates.

Most of mine were able to heal on their own once they were given a quiet tank to recuperate in. If a fin is split all the way, it may or may not regenerate.

There are two things that help a lot. The first is salt. Add a teaspoon per gallon of salt unless you already have salt in the tank. For some diseases salt at up to 3 teaspoons per gallon can really help. For torn fins you could use 3 per gallon, but start at 1 per gallon and see how it goes. If the fins do not look better in a day or so, add some more salt.

The second thing is Melafix. It is great stuff. It is an extract of some sort of tea tree that grows in Australia. Just follow the directions on the bottle.

And using both salt and Melafix is the best.

Once the fins are back to normal, or if you have to continue the treatment for more than a week, do a large water change.

Never underestimate the power of clean water as well. I have found alot of times with my fish if I increase the frequency of water changes the fish heal up very quickly.

I concur with Frank...

Untried - but I wonder if using the alder cones would be helpful in a situation like this. I didn't get a chance to see if I had any alder trees down by the stream this weekend.

Melafix, I have never used Frank's method but I would like to try it the next time I run in to this problem.
