Electric Yellow Lab

Isn't it known to be a hybrid?

Sure I guess so.... if I am thinking of the right fish .... quite a bit more aggressive than a " yellow lab ".

Yellow labs are a color morph of Labidochromis caeruleus.
Morphs are different thatn hybrids. Perhaps some day someone will separate the morphs into their own species. Actually the "electric" yellow is an embellished name to make the fish more appealing to buyers. There are two "yellow" labs in the hobby. The "Lions Cove" and a yellow morph from Kakusa with blue in the dorsal. The Lion's Cove is the one that is everywhere. The blue finned variety is not as readily available.
Here is a link to Sam Borsteins site about L. caeruleus. 30 years ago when the malawi frenzy started I had some of the white morph with blue fins. I haven't seen these for quite awhile. Maybe someone in the club has them. They should be around since this animal reproduces like rats. Read this whole article especially about the in-breeding.

As far as a community fish. With small to mid-sized malawi cichlids I would say yes. Angelfish etc. no.

A few years back an "electric yellow" line came out.... I believe it was a cross between a red zebra and a lab. Not always just a name ;) I have even seen some of these crosses in our auction and in stores around here.

I know there are two morphs in the wild. It could be that he has a true lab... it could be that he has the hybrid. If he has the hybrid it is more aggressive.

More preferable are the Lions Cove I and II. The Yellow is more "lemony", IMO, and my favorite. The Lions Cove II has the whiter belly of the two...something that some people are ok with and some are not.
I do not believe that Electric Yellow constitutes a hybrid, just another cutesy name placed on these Cichlids.

This fish, if you were there, was shown when I spoke in November, it could have been ( the one you mention) the Nkhata Bay variety,,,,depending on which exact location color morph you had the one I showed was with a hint of bluish sheen on the upper half of the body (just enough to say its not pure white), the dorsal black stripe is the same as in all the other "Labs".
So, that whitish Lab that was shown was actually from Lions Cove,,,not in Lions Cove but just south of Lions Cove,,,anything close just gets the same name.(but both Lions Cove and Nkhata Bay are so closely colored it would be hard to differentitiate by most people) The people, native collectors and fish house staff being very simplistic just call them all Lions Cove.
The best looking "Electric Yellow" comes from Mbowe Island, but they are rare there,,,I only photographed one fish from there this year. Lars,my Swedish buddy observed 4 fish.
I think the last count as far as fish easily representing a distinguished fish location from another location, the count was about 5,,,you might consider this count a bit high but I think everyone could spot the difference pretty quick.
There are several yellow's that look almost the same (1) several white with blue (2) some white morphs no blue (3) and the blue morph which the name represents (4) and there is a 5th one which I am trying to get a picture of which is orange (5) AND YES, you heard it here first, ORANGE!
Hopefully next year I will have the picture! Apparently there is a African Cichlid wholesaler in France that has this fish and is breeding it rather than selling them off.(pers.com. Ad Konings, Safaris 2009) So you may end up hearing about it and now you will know that it won't be a crossed fish.

Labidochromis sp."lions cove" (wild fish two weeks after importing them,Aquarium shot)

Labidochromis_caeruleus_wild_caught.jpg

The picture may be decieveing to some people as the pearly blue spots are a flash reflection, and these are young fish around 3 inches. They look awesome now!
Like most "Elecric yellows" they are more whitish when born and develop their color as they grow and mature.
Hope this helps,,,,a bit:)

And this is why we read FISH FORUMS!
:):):)
Hi Tony,,,yes they are not really "rare" but are not found in large groups like a lot of other fish, so this makes them a bit harder to collect and when its hard to collect then the fish becomes "rare" in the hobby!
Remember this is a deep dwelling fish,,my shots last year started at 100 feet and I followed the little bugger down to 120 feet for about 6 pictures,,,checked the shots and then headed for the surface!
Now figure in a decompression schedule of about 25 feet per day and that's 4 days just to get them to the surface!
The collectors just don't sit around for 4 days,,,they move on to catch other fish and then return daily to the bottom to release another 25 feet of rope,,,now for you and I, that bottom time of about 10 minutes shoots down a whole day of diving,,,in order to prevent getting the "bends"! (they do not have "dive computers")

Cheers,Larry

Thanks for the link longstocking,,I could not view it due to high traffic,,so I guess everyone there was taking a look.
Yes there was a crossed Labido "electric yellow" with a Red Zebra,,,,there is also a Labido. Electric yellow that has been bred in the far east that has no black dorsal margin as well,,,I do not know which picture was posted so I cannot comment on that picture.

Thanks Klaus:) maybe I should invite you over more often:lol:
And bring your camera,,,maybe you can teach this old dog some new tricks:lol:
Tanks Larry, you da man. all Labidos are really cool little animals in my book.
Yes,I like this particular genus,I think they are all less aggessive than a lot of others and more suitable for those first timers,,,which the yellow color does attract anyways (a good thing).

Hi Richard, yes I would like to come over,,,this year I was suffering from a cold,,,which is rare and felt like crap.
I do not mind at all traveling around and seeing a few fish rooms,,,but it might be better after I arrive that we all pre-arrange and meet for dinner and a visit of a few homes/fish rooms.
My biggest problem was the airlines,,,,seems I cannot arrive eraly on Friday and return late on Sunday with out paying a premium! SO things were a bit rushed,,,and Saturday,,you and others helping out have to stick around to clean and close up.
Pat was an excellent host,,,but the weather was not the greatest this past November,so there was no sense in trying to go anywhere, except the meeting!

Would love to come out and speak again, you have a great group!:D

Cheers,Larry
