You have a 400 gallon tank. You can only do lake malawi. Here is the list of things you can put in-
Any color sand or gravel
Any species from the lake
Any plants from the lake
Any rock formation you whant. Or if you like the naked look ;) then go for it lol
Draw a little scetch up and post it. I would like to see some drawings because I am thinking of redoing my 40 breeder.. Thanks
Oh....and please make it natural.

Are you doing your 40 breeder or a dream 400 gallon tank?

If you post up what you are thinking of doing, I am sure you will get some pointers to make it even better.

I would do malawi haps.

I would do mostly open spaces with a natural sand substrate and a rock pile or two.

I would have a group of Fossorochromis rostratus and Cyrtocara moorii. Hopefully with enough fish and room in the tank you could observe the natural feeding behavior.

I also would have a school of Synodontis njassae.

I might do a smaller version in my 180 in the fall. It currently is housing grow-outs for the catfish convention.

The catfish will probably be petricola instead of the njassae.

I think that is about it... as long as the tank is a long 400 gallon and not tall or wide.... like 10 or 12 feet long.

OOPS>.. wrong lake  malawi YUCK!! :p :p :p :p

I tried keeping rostratus and moori in a 125g a few years ago. Just males and some fish that I'd grown out from 4-5" to jumbo size. Didn't work so well. Male rostratus can be some touch characters...and moori are by and large pusses.

180g might work...but that's what Tony's got his in...and the dominant male pretty much takes half the tank!

+1 on C. moori being pretty meek.

Most of the time, the male Fosso isn't chasing folks off. Maybe he just sees you through the glass, Matt and has the hots for you...?

I'd put posting a drawing of a theoretical fish tank somewhere behind those as well.

Don't spend money on back to school shopping. Spend it on fish!

Be sure to put lots of details in it with a full range of values! I personally like the ebony pencils but you can do a well enough job with a #2. Little tip: try ramping up you contrast by sneaking in darker than actual darks shade next to your hi-light tones! :happy0180:

I'll see if I can pull up an example.
