Discus laying eggs

Woo-Hoo! I have no idea whether the other Discus is a male, but I know I have at least one female, because I caught her in the act of laying eggs a few minutes ago:

So stupid newbie question: are the eggs fertile when laid, or does the male now have to fertilize them?

This being their first spawn, and given the interest being shown by the other fish in the tank (particularly the Rams and Apistogramma), I doubt seriously whether the eggs will survive. But having tried once, I hope they try again!

As soon as I figure it out, Jumbie, I'll let you know, LOL. I'm a clueless noob who is thrilled that at least the fish know what to do!

Another stoopid newbie question - may I safely assume that, even though *I* can't tell whether the second fish is a male or not, that *they* know? Is it possible I have two females? Because if the second fish is a male, he hasn't figured out what he needs to do! LOL It is their first time, though, maybe he's nervous.
