Dermatitis from bloodworms?

So the bloodworms I got this past weekend from the group buy had partially thawed so I figured I'd take the opportunity to aliquot them before refreezing them.

I'm nearly done and finishing up when my hands start itching wildly and I break out in little welts all over my hands! I did some quick googling, and it turns out that a lot of people have contact dermatitis to the bloodworms used in fish food!

Well I've got my hands slathered in Benadryl cream now and will use gloves when handling bloodworms in the future. It won't keep me from feeding them to the fish, though!

Anyone else ever experience this?

wow! i have not had anything serious like that..
sometimes when aquascaping for a long time i get itchy all over..idk if its the plants, fish, chemicals in the water or what..usually take antihistamine and all good.

I have the same reaction too. And I had to find out the hard way, by accidentally rubbing my eyes after I thought I had thoroughly cleaned them after washing them. I can't even handle the freeze dried ones either.

Oops

Sorry guys/gals, had no idea until Rachel indicated at the meeting that it's an issue for some. No indication that daphnia or brine shrimp illicit similar, happy to buy back bloodworms from anyone who participated in the group order for whom this is an issue.

Yeah, this happens to me, too.

You can get nitrile gloves pretty cheap at Sam's club - better than latex, since lots of people have latex allergies.

Yeah I have a similar reaction with blood worms. I use blackworms and red wigglers now.

I have had reactions with plants(not as severe), I think java fern may be the culprit there.
