daphnia food...

Hey,

So I got passed this link for a homemade daphnia food from someone on Apistogramma.com ... http://www.well.com/~debunix/fish/Daphnia.html

started using it on my daphnia culture that was getting kind of blah on green water alone, and the culture has exploded. They seem to love this stuff! All DIY, and I think that I spent less than $20 for the materials that will probably last an eternity.

Not only have they started reproducing like crazy again, but they also have back that nice pink coloration that the culture originally had when I got them at a mini auction. Only downside is that it does create a little bit of waste sediment, and since the daphnia are molting like crazy, I am going to need to siphon their tank a little more often.

Thought you all may be interested!

What proportions do you use? A pound of paprika seems a bit much? Where did you get brewers yeast?

I think somewhere in that link it said something about proportions not mattering as much. I happened to have about 1/3 a bottle of paprika, so just did even proportions based off that... was just a bit more than what was needed to fill the paprika bottle to use as a shaker.

As far as brewers yeast, we have some sitting around from when my wife was pregnant... but I'm sure I saw it at the health food store where I got the spirulina and other stuff.

This is definitely the type of thing where the ingredients will make enough to last a loooooooong time.

I did end up using the peas. My food processor is a cheap mini chopper, and the blades werent good enough to totally desentigrate them though... so there are some small chunks of peas. We'll see if this ends up being problematic in the long term. Either way, its outrageous to see how much this culture has taken off considering how stagnant it has been over the last month or so.
