Hello I am new to this site and I was Trying to find out info On the Cuban Cichlid (Nandopsis tetracanthus) Because I am going to start Breeding them and I wanted to know a few things Before I go and Order them. I read that they Like a temp around 78 Degrees and that they are Aggressive Towards each other. Now is that true and if so when they spawn do I need to put a devider in to break them apart???
Also I am gonna put in some pictures of my tank and please let me know if I need to change anything. I have a pool filiter sand bottom and it is a 125 gallon fish tank. The next Question I have is how many Cubans would I have to get to try and get a Pair I was thinking about 5 to 8 to try and get a pair???

Welcome to the forum, Jim. Sweet tank setup. :)

Unfortunately, I have never kept them (longer than a night in a hotel room), but will say that they are quite useful for slapping drunk people in the face with late at night. (I know this from experience.)

I believe a few folks on the forum have kept them and will have some equally useful (though likely more applicable) information to offer.

I have a few that I bought as 1" fish and find them to be slow growing. They are currently in different tanks, so I can't speak to conspecific agression, although I have heard that they are rough on each other. I think that getting a group of 6-8 and letting them naturally pair off is the best way to go if you don't want to start with an established pair. Good luck with them.

I recently picked up a young pair from House of Tropicals...and have them in a 33g... They have (or atleast had a couple of weeks ago) a whole tank of them and some are even pairing off.

I'd get 4-6 of them to assure yourself a pair. Fish like this are better to keep and breed before they get to monster size...

They don't seem particularly crazy aggressive vs. other central americans, although mine haven't bred yet.

I keep mine at room temp in my fishroom (~74) and they're doing great. Good feeding + a large, warm water change will be my strategy for breeding them.

Good luck!

Never kept them myself. but I would consider making bigger caves out of heavier materials for them. I could be wrong, but I don't think that a home that moves around easily won't make them feel secure enough to breed. Love the dragons. GOOD LUCK!

We had a group of adults(10-12) in a 75gallon at the shop.We have large clay pots in there and they seemed to be happy. I bought the last female a couple months ago.We got them from a local breeder I'll see if we can get some more.

From what I've read, clay pots and clay pipe are the best. I would prob go with clay pipe so that the waste isn't trapped inside, like the pvc being used in his pic.

Depends on the temperament of the pair once they have the fry. If they get along, leave them with the fry. Watching a pair with their brood is one of the best parts of keeping new worlds IMO.

Remember, eventually you will have a lot of babies that need a new home.
