Confused rainbows

So I have what I believe is a pair. Only thing is i have slight feeling they are male "Becca pointed it out...they were originally hers from mchambers"

I have seen both shimmy at each other.
Both clean a clay piece.
They have locked jaws but nothing too violent.

So mating, dominance dance, or they're the same sex taking turns in different roles?

In my tank, one was notably smaller and less colorful. When I visited them at Will's place, they were both SUPER colorful and the smaller one was catching up.

Thank you
they did color up nicely
I think I have too males trying to mate with each other but still not sure there's no real aggressive chasing just the occasional squabble like I see with other egg layers.
