Tash, will the filter be open and exposed to the light? I think if you provide some kind of convoluted surface for algae to grow on, before you return the water to the tank, you'll really be able to keep the water clean.

I have a flourescent light suspended over the top of a 20 gallon, and it's filtered by an over-the-side Whisper filter. The outflow tray is covered with a thick carpet of algae, and I think that works to keep the ammonia levels way down.

Good job! How does the filter work?[/b]

The current filter was my husbands idea, based on my original but not so good idea. Mine was to make the canopy a bit wider then the tank so it would go all the way to the wall, this would allow enough room for the shelf for the filter and for the lights and still let me feed the fish and change water etc. then I originally made the filter out of plexi I got cheep at home depot because it was scratched. but apparently I am not that good at cutting and siliconing together plexi so mine leaked (can you see the water stains?). so my husband asked me if the filter had to be square? could it be rounded? so he made the pvc pipe filter based on my plexi idea. we also ordered a in line pump to put next to the filter so it won't be in the tank. My husband doesn't want to see any equiptment, which is why I decided to put the filter in the canopy. the heater is also in the filter.
here is my original filter before the canopy was even done:

The filter works by pumping water into one end where the water runs over the heater and through the filter media and then is dumped back into the tank at the other end.
preaty simple (well the concept is anyway). the canopy is simple too. just a box with no attached top or bottom. just pine 1X3s screwed into oak 1X10s. I used metal L shaped thingys (technical term) to hold it together from the inside so you can't see any screws or nails on the outside.

Unfortuantly my husband thought my suspended light idea was "tacky" so no, the filter can't really get any light. there is TONS of algae on the tank though.

I am changing the tank though from tang to south america. I already removed the rocks and got some plants. it still needs a ton of aquascaping. when it is done I will post a photo of it.

Darn shame, I bet your filter would have worked.

If you still have it.... use Weld On to fuse plexiglass, silicone doesn't seal it all that well.

You could mount one of the little under cabinet T5 lights over it for light....

yeah, I couldn't find any weld on locally and I am too cheap to have it shiped  my husbands idea really is better though. there are fewer places that need to be sealed and it was faster to make. plus I wasn't very good at cutting the plexi, it was jagged. of course it is always easier when my husband does the work

Hey, Tash, it would really help if you and your husband could do a how-to pictoral on how you made the filter/canopy combination and send it to Marya for the Biotope. This is the kind of thing you can't read about in the big aquarium magazines, and can only get from the hobbyist groups.

ok, I will try. I don't think my husband took any 'during' photos of the filter though. but it's a fairly simple concept and I can get more photos of the finished product.

Maybe you could find a Rubbermaid storage container that will fit...

I have filters made from them sitting on most of my tanks :)

Thanks for sharing this with us. There are some great ideas in your hood/filter. I use lots of PVC in my fishroom but you took it to a higher level - nice!

and my husband is the one who had the idea to use the PVC for the filter. he can comes with some great stuff.
