Calvus Tank.....

I'm rearranging my 150g tall and want to do a calvus themed tank......

3 blacks
5 whites
and a few peacocks for the middle portion of the tank.

How well does a group of calvus get along?

Jose?

Anybody?

Ive kept 12 juvies in a 36 inch 45G. They were all black ink fins and I had some chasing and a few jumpers due to chasing. Never had one die on me from aggression. Provide lots of caves and nooks and crannies. the only thing I would worry about is that peacocks are alot more active and more aggressive during feeding time. Maybe Cyps crusing top portion would be better for the calvus'.

thks jose. I have a group of 9 cyps in the tank right now but they just aren't doing it for me. i'll load the tank up with some more wood and a few caves and it should be fine. (I hope)

I have two yellow calvus and 3 black comps in a 55 gallon... no aggression issues at all... but everyone has plenty of hiding spaces if/when necessary. I am actually planning on adding a goldhead to my group.

I wouldn't mix black and white for several reasons...

In truth you will not be able to tell the difference once they are in the tank. There will be a hierarchy among them and some will become black and the others will be gray, white, dark gray etc.... They will also cross. If you ever need to git rid of these fish you will not be able to sell them as you don't what they are.

Stick with one type.... and do TONS of them.... it's a 150 so I would suggest about 20 . For this to work you need A LOT of them. Other wise, what will happen is the dominant male, one by one, will start to pick on the next dominant male.

Peacocks will work but since it's such a tall tank I think I'd go with Cyprichromis or Paracyprichromis.

I hope that all made sense.... a lil outta it !

Thanks Sarah and Rich....

I'll probably end up putting some goldhead comps in with the blacks and put the whites in a new tank......

Sarah, shouldn't Rich'syellows and blacks end up looking like Bengal Calvus within a few weeks? :confused0068::confused0068:

LOL...

actually, it is not a great idea to mix comps and calvus, from the standpoint that they can interbreed. but these fish are never leaving my tank... so I am not too concerned. and frankly, I'd be rather surprised if the fry survived!

Joseph -

Comps and calvus are very docile when small - the perfect fish for any tang community. Once the males start outgrowing the females, say at 3 or 3.5" or so, they get very aggressive. My male gold head wiped out several other gold head males and a black calvus male in my big tank. 7 feet of space and a lot of rockwork was not enough room to hide. If you have juvies, it will take years before they get to that size and you'll enjoy them plenty, but be ready for when they get big.
