I agree that I have had mixed results.
I was the person here that started a thread (too lazy to search) that talked about them juicing their fish. In other words, I called them out on treating their fish with hormones.
That was because I had ordered all males. i received males all colored up at like 3" which some haps I ordered rarely are FULL color at that size. Specifically it was a borleyi which was a full blown full color male, and 6 months later it was holding eggs...
However I will say that they have pretty healthy fish and ARE worth ordering from. I've ordered quite a bit online and I think they are a great company. They used to have like $25 flat rate a year or two ago, but demand has pushed shipping up to $39. Still from Utah or wherever, that's a steal for overnight shipping.
In the end, I WOULD recommend them. Great selection and decent prices.
But IMO my favorite is the local dealer in York,PA of cichlidsarespecial.com. I am not advertising for Jay or anything, but the guy has great fish from some farms in florida and not only are they amazing prices (smaller fish usually though, so patience is needed) but he also quarenteens them before hand and has great shipping prices to Maryland overnight ($25) or so... Check him out too.
In the end, not to rant, ordering online over the past 5 years has become more convienent and a little cheaper for the hobbyist. I think we can thank the internet for that overall, but I think the hobby is growing outside of the wholesalers and allowing us to buy cheaper.
