Hey guys was hoping that some of you might be able to help me out. I used to breed a few fish long ago mostly Flowerhorns but I dont want to do any hybrids so im looking for some ideas on easy to moderate fish to breed. I would like to find some that can be done in tanks smaller than a 55. Like maybe some dwarf cichlids i also dont want to do fish that are already over done i would like to be able to share with others and maybe sell to fish store. Im not worried about making money i just used to find it alot of fun. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated and approx. tank sizes. Thanks again.

Hi Chance, welcome to the forum.

If you are into South American and West African cichlids, there are a plethora of species to choose from. The same with the African and Centrals.

Don't worry about making money cause you won't unless you get rare, hard to come by species that will suck your wallet and your blood when they don't flourish.

Do fish you that you enjoy and make you happy while you do thier water changes.

Join the club and become privy to a limitless supply of connections that can get you started. :)

But if you want an idea of species to research, try our breeding award program listing to get you going:

I would concur with Francine. There are many apistogramma species that dont need large tanks. Also the pelvicachromis species are able to be done in smaller tanks. The other list to check out and get more information on would be those on the ACA C.A.R.E.S. list.

I just looked the two you recommended and its exactly what im looking for. Do you think that 20 gallon tanks are big enough for them or should i go with a 33long for the apisto cuz i know they say its better with the harem. also any ideas if there are guys here in the boards that are breeding them so i can find me some. Thanks again

The 20 longs should be fine to breed these guys out. You just need to make sure there are plenty of places to hide, caves, heavy plant load, etc. This will help to disperse the agression. Recommend a sand bottom as they like to move substrate. There are a few people that breed apistos, there is actually a member of PVAS, lives out in western Loudoun county that always seems to have a few going. I will try to remember his screen name over there.

One easy species are Strawberry Apistos(Apistogramma eremnopyge). I have a pair that has spawned a number of times. I haven't had any luck raising the fry yet, but they haven't been to difficult to get to spawn.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned anything to you yet about the American Cichlid Association convention in Silver Spring July 21-24. There will be LOADS of fish for sale - out of hotel rooms and an auction - plus lots of other stuff. CCA is hosting this year. Look for all the details in the CCA DOES ACA forum on this site.

Have fun!
