Breeding Box

I think if you tried it to breed Africans in it, you'd have some dead fish.

Growing out fry would probably work, but seems like overkill when breeder nets are so cheap. The best application that I see for it would to use it as a freshwater refugium by lighting it and filling it with moss (though most fish won't mess with the moss if it's in the tank anyway).

So yeah... not something I'd spend money on...

EDIT - you also need a pump/powerhead to run it as well. That means extra electricity and potential failure.

I agree, a cheap breeding net should work. Just suck up the wrigglers with a turkey baster and put them in a breeding net in the same tank. Then transfer them to another tank after they get a little bigger.

He keeps mostly Africans.

Marc - If you're chomping at the bit to pick up some useful fish gadgets, buy an egg tumbler and a few $3 breeder nets... they will prove much more useful than that box. Shop around for the tumbler as some are really overpriced imo. Alternatively, talk to Charlie about getting one of his homemade ones or google "DIY egg tumbler sponge filter" for some cheap and easy ideas for making your own.

We have one of these and find it occasionally useful. We don't use it for breeding so much as (small) fish storage. If we are going to sell fish and know we won't have time to strip them we will store the fish in this thing until we are ready to sell them.

That said, last time we did this someone forgot to put the strainer/guard on it and three of six julidichromis decided to ride the water slide into the mbuna tank...the one that survived the first night we left in with the mbuna for two or three months and it seemed pretty happy hanging out with the Demasoni.

One thing to be aware of is that it is very loud when running.
