I have not heard of problems with Hagen Elite heaters. I don't use them myself. I like to run my heaters vertical or close to vertical. I find the Hagen Elite heaters to be too long to fit in 40b tanks.

I like the Aqueon Pro black heaters and finding them at the right wattage and price is hard.

If you're only buying one or two heaters, you could note the prices on Ken's, DFS, or anywhere for that matter and go over to petsmart. They will match the price.
