Stopped by once... not sure if you are missing much... I wasn't all that impressed. This was about a year ago... have things changed since then?

this was my first time there by mistake, saw all the central american fish you can think off and huge with fry in display,is a very large glass window on the right hand side of the mall is hiding behind that.

I stopped by there last year one time. Some really cool stock - especially if you're like me and new to big mean cichlids. Saw a lot of adult fish there I had not seen but in pictures before. They also get some cool imported plecos from time to time and sell them at very reasonable prices.

Worth a stop by if you're in the area imo.

He has a lot of nice plecos in right now. It is important to note that he in no way quarantines or guarantees anything. He also isn't great at feeding them well, keeping the glass clean or marking prices. They do change large amounts of water on a weekly basis. He tranships most of his fish and so the prices are (sometimes) lower than competitors.

I would rather go to beltway then house of tropicals. HOT is way over price on all of there stuff and not a very good selection on cichlids. All the fish I get from beltway grow up healthy. Too many people are looking for that "perfect" store. Richard provides some of those rarer fish that these other stores don't have.

I see the need for both stores.

I always find something I am looking for or wasn't looking for but suddenly wanted at HOT. HOT is a club sponsor and has always been good to me. Like any kind of store, one must shop for the bargains. And like any store, sometimes there are great deals, and other times not so much.

It is worth going to, I could barely ever find a price for the stuff I wanted though and the staff when I went was none too helpful. Seems like they deal with a lot of heavy-hitters, nice plecos when i was there. Lots of big tanks which was nice, not a ton of big fish crammed into small spaces.

That was my assessment. Worth stopping, but not to the level of being a "destination" fish store.

Agreed. We went looking for it maybe 9-10 months ago. It is hidden in a REALLY, REALLY sketchy mall - we actually got followed around for a while by some guys who started after us when I stopped to use the restroom.

We went because my husband heard good things about the piranhas and was thinking of seeing if they'd want his. The owner was, altogether, rude to us and, based on the people we saw stopping in and expressing interest in his collection of large, toothy fish, we weren't willing to put our uglies at risk of landing in one of those homes... No guys, it is not a good idea to stage a death match between a piranha and a "fighting fish.":angry3:

Sounds like the makers of the detestable videos that are all too prevalent on YouTube featuring a school of piranha disemboweling a live rat or other small unfortunate creature to the cheers of bystanders.

I stop by there once a week at least. Richard definitely gets in some cool fish from time to time. My only gripe with the place is him actually. He isn't willing to negotiate at all and comes of like a prick when you talk to him. The woman who works there is as nice as she can be. The prices aren't bad on fancy plecos or Flowerhorns. But 40$ for Guttulatus @4". That is just crazy. I can appreciate nice fish at good prices. I think he has lost touch with the hobby a bit. And needs to reevaluate his pricing a little.

All of that said I would still shop there and his dry goods pricing is some of the best I've seen around. Definitely worth stopping by and checking out.

Yeah - we feed ours pellets and, guess what, they LOVE them.

Also - They don't have a large selection of dry goods, but Showcase in Wheaton has great prices on what they do have. Even their fish seemed competitively priced to me.

Beltway has the best price on SFB Roll a cube bloodworms. His price is more than $5 less than everwhere else in our area.

I've actually never been.

The whole unmarked prices and surly ownership factors never really motivated me to get over there...
