I visited HOT today and some 2.5" beani @ $12 and 1.5" @ $9. First time I've seen them in there so I figured I'd let you know in case anyone had any interest

Good to know... but I know better on both of those guys :)

Dan (of COA) said that beani are so mean that he finds dead ones in the many thousand gallon pond that he breeds them in.

I'm 3/3 on bartoni offing each other in short order.

Cool fish...just mean as heck!

Both species are on my hit list along with
Haits. Got a line on the nasties, and the aforementioned species but I'm focused on other species at the moment. Next year or two I will pick then up. But I think a beani could be the meanest cichlid period not the most capable but definitely the meanest.

I picked my bartoni from Jeff back at aquamania and all 4 are still going strong. I've always liked beani but the aggression and bloat issues have always made me second guess getting any

You probably gave them enough room :)

Good luck to those trying to keep bartoni. I've not kept them myself, but most accounts I have read is that they are meaner than hell. The only somewhat personal experience I have with them was seeing them in Rusty Wessel's fish room at the ACA a few summers ago. Rusty kept a group of 6 or 7 adults in a 265. There was a breeding pair that took over 3/4 of the tank. The other bartoni, along with the group of 12" frontosa that Rusty was using as "dithers" were all in pinned in the corner of the tank. Personally, I wouldn't try keeping a pair undivided in anything smaller than a 6 foot tank. Even then, I'd make sure there was a place for the female to get away from the male.

Please keep us posted of your experiences.

Sheesh how big were the bartoni? That's my style 12" target fish....

I'm just going from memory, and looking at fish in a big tank could give a skewed view of things. They were definitely adult, full grown fish.

6-7" is a lunker. Rusty's are enormous because they're several years old and in 260g of water on an auto-water-changing system!
