Axelrod On The Run

Herbert Axelrod has taken refuge in Cuba as the IRS has charged him with a number of crimes. Apparently he saw this coming. In the past year or two he has sold his New Jersey home and a huge collection of antique stringed instruments for a total gain of close to $25 million. He has a home (and bank accounts) in Switzerland and is currently staying at a posh hotel in Havana, where his ship is anchored.

Part of the IRS charges are that he paid bonuses diretly to Swiss bank accounts and told the recipients that they shouldn't disclose them on their income statements and tax forms.

Friday's Washington Post has an article about the arrest of Dr. Axelrod. He was finally caught in Berlin, after flying into Germany from Zurich. He has been charged with defrauding the IRS, but apparently that charge has opened up other issues and other possible charges, for example the claim that he deliberately exaggerated the value of instruments he donated to the Smithsonian and NJ symphony. The article is in the Style section.

He probably wanted to visit his money in Switzerland and then had to change planes in Berlin to go to his next destination, where he was trapped.
