Sometimes my A.panduro female will build a sand pile at the mouth of one of her caves.

They are of the subfamily Geophaginae. (wikipedia makes me sound smart ;P http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geophaginae)

I know that most of the experts on apistogramma.com highly recommend sand substrates because they definitely will sift it. And since I bow in reverence and awe of their knowledge, I do what I am told and give them sand ;P

Probably is. Are they digging to get underneath something. Put some flower pots or hollow wood in the tank they like to breed in caves.
